The Fox Who Collected Starlight
Lily pushed her wild red hair behind her ears and sighed. It always tangled when she played in the forest. That's when she saw him—a sleek orange fox with the brightest eyes she'd ever seen, like drops of golden honey.
"Follow me," the fox seemed to say with his tail, and Lily did.
They crept through whispering trees until they reached a secret pool Lily had never seen before. But it wasn't just a pool of water. It was a pool of liquid starlight, shimmering and glowing like the night sky had melted onto the forest floor.
"Beautiful," Lily breathed.
Then she noticed something strange. Tiny little creatures sat around the pool's edge, slumped and gray. They looked like fireflies, but without their glow. They moved slowly, bumping into each other.
"They're zombie fireflies," the fox spoke, surprising Lily. "They've forgotten how to shine."
"Can we help them?"
The fox nodded. "The pool holds the secret. It's filled with starlight vitamins—the light from forgotten dreams and lost wishes."
Lily cupped her hands and dipped them into the glowing pool. The liquid was warm and sparkled against her skin. She gently let it drip over the little fireflies. One by one, they began to wiggle. Then wiggle faster. Then—POP! Pop! POP!—each firefly lit up, glowing brighter than ever.
"Thank you!" they buzzed, dancing around Lily and the fox in a celebration of light.
"Your hair," the fox said softly. "It's beautiful because it's wild. Just like starlight isn't meant to be tamed."
Lily smiled, touching her messy red curls. Maybe wild wasn't so bad after all.
She visited the pool many times after that, always with her fox friend. They helped many creatures remember their shine, and Lily learned that the best kind of magic isn't about changing who you are—it's about letting your true self glow.
Sometimes, if you look closely at the sky on a clear night, you can still see the fireflies dancing among the stars, reminding the world that everyone deserves to shine.
