The Fox Who Collected Moments
Lily loved her iphone more than anything. She played games, watched videos, and texted friends, but she never looked up at the world around her.
One afternoon, while chasing a silly zombie character through her favorite game, she heard a rustle in the bushes. A rusty-orange fox peeked out, its emerald eyes twinkling with mischief. The fox didn't run away like wild animals usually did. Instead, it tapped the screen with its nose, then gestured with its bushy tail for Lily to follow.
Curious, Lily tucked her phone into her pocket and followed the fox through the meadow, past the old oak tree, and into a secret garden she had never noticed before. There, she found flowers that grew back moments after being picked — zombie flowers that never truly died!
The fox, whose name was Rusty, showed her how the flowers kept coming back because they shared their seeds with each other. "That's why they never truly disappear," the fox seemed to say without speaking. "They live on through friendship."
Lily thought about her friends at school. She realized she'd been so busy with her phone that she hadn't really noticed them lately. Rusty nudged her hand, and suddenly Lily understood what the fox was teaching her.
The next day, Lily left her iphone in her backpack. At recess, she played tag with Emma, helped Tyler build a tower, and learned that Maya loved drawing foxes just like Rusty. She discovered that real friends were like those zombie flowers — even when they're apart, a piece of them stays with you forever.
From then on, Lily still enjoyed her games, but she also made time for the friends who made her heart bloom. And sometimes, just sometimes, she swear she saw a flash of orange in the bushes, reminding her that the best moments aren't found on a screen — they're found in the magic of friendship.
