The Fox Who Chased Lightning

Oliver was a small orange fox who lived in the hollow of an old oak tree. Every evening, he would watch the children in the nearby field playing baseball. The way they hit the ball soaring through the air made Oliver's heart flutter.

One stormy afternoon, as Oliver was running through the meadow, he saw something extraordinary. A bolt of lightning flashed across the dark sky, and when it struck the ground, it didn't burn. Instead, it created something that glowed with the same brilliant light.

Curious, Oliver crept closer. It was a baseball made of pure lightning, still crackling with energy. His nose twitched with wonder. This was no ordinary ball—it was magical!

'Hello there, little friend,' a voice rumbled like distant thunder. Oliver looked up to see an old wise badger leaning on his walking stick. 'That's the Lightning Ball. It appears only to those with the purest hearts. It grants one wish to whoever catches it without fear.'

Oliver's tail swished with excitement. He wanted to wish for something wonderful, but what? The badger smiled. 'Think carefully, young one. The best wishes are those that help others.'

Suddenly, Oliver remembered the children who played baseball every day. How they laughed and ran together, even though little Maya always struck out. She would cry while the others tried to cheer her up.

'I wish,' Oliver said boldly, 'that everyone who plays baseball will feel the joy of the game, no matter if they win or lose. I want Maya to smile when she plays.'

The Lightning Ball flared brighter than ever, then shot into the sky like a shooting star. The storm clouds parted, revealing a rainbow.

The next day, Oliver watched as Maya stepped up to the plate. She swung, missed, and—instead of crying—she laughed! The other children cheered not for winning, but for the fun of playing together. The orange fox's heart glowed warmer than the sun, knowing that sometimes the best magic is kindness.
