The Fox Who Caught Lightning
Mittens was no ordinary cat. While other cats spent their days napping in sunny patches, Mittens spent hers running through the Whispering Woods, chasing shadows and dreams.
One stormy evening, as Mittens was running past the Old Oak Tree, she saw something remarkable. A flash of lightning split the sky—bright as a thousand fireflies—and where it struck the ground, a small, shivering fox appeared.
"Hello there!" Mittens called out, her whiskers twitching with curiosity.
The fox shook raindrops from her golden fur. "I'm Flicker," she said softly. "The lightning brought me here from the Faraway Mountains. I don't know how to get home."
Mittens sat beside her new friend. "The woods can be scary when you're alone. But don't worry—I know every path, every hiding spot, every secret stream. We'll find your way together."
All through the stormy night, the cat and the fox journeyed side by side. When thunder crashed like falling trees, Mittens showed Flicker how to count the seconds between flashes to know when the storm would pass. When the wind howled through the branches, Flicker taught Mittens how to listen to the songs of sleeping birds.
"I never thought I'd be friends with a cat," Flicker admitted as dawn's first light painted the sky pink.
"And I never thought I'd meet someone who fell from the lightning," Mittens purred, pressing her warm flank against her friend. "But sometimes the best surprises come from the stormiest nights."
By sunrise, they reached the edge of the Faraway Mountains. Flicker's family was waiting—her mother's eyes shining with relief, her brothers and sisters jumping with joy.
"Thank you, Mittens," Flicker said, nuzzling her friend one last time. "You taught me that even in the darkest storms, kindness can light the way home."
And every evening after that, whenever lightning flashed across the sky, Mittens would look toward the Faraway Mountains and smile—knowing that somewhere, her friend was doing the same.
For what is a friend, after all, but someone who helps you find your way when the world feels dark and stormy?
