The Fox Who Caught Lightning

Ten-year-old Toby loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon, he practiced in the dusty field behind his house, swinging his old bat until his arms ached. But he never had anyone to play with. All the other kids lived too far away.

One hot summer evening, as Toby tossed his baseball up and caught it again, he heard a rustle in the tall grass. Out popped a fox — the most beautiful creature he had ever seen, with fur like autumn leaves and eyes that sparkled like stars.

"Hello there," Toby whispered, staying very still.

The fox didn't run away. Instead, it sat down and watched him with its head tilted to the side. When Toby threw the baseball, the fox leaped into the air and caught it gently in its mouth, dropping it back at Toby's feet.

"You want to play?" Toby's eyes went wide.

For weeks, Toby and his new friend played baseball every day. The fox was amazing at catching fly balls and could outrun any throw. Toby named him Sparky because of his lightning-fast moves.

Then came the day of the big neighborhood baseball game. Toby was scared to play with kids he didn't know. His hands shook as he packed his baseball bag.

Sparky appeared from the bushes and nudged Toby's leg with his nose. The fox's eyes seemed to say: You can do this.

"I wish you could come with me," Toby sighed.

As if in answer, the sky suddenly darkened. A single bolt of lightning flashed across the clouds — but it wasn't scary at all. It was magical, silver-blue and shimmering. When it faded, Sparky was gone.

Toby felt a warm glow in his heart, like the lightning had filled him with courage. He walked to the baseball field standing tall.

During the game, Toby played better than ever before. He hit the ball so far it seemed to fly forever. When he slid into home plate, he saw something wonderful — a fox sitting on the nearby hillside, watching with eyes full of pride.

That night, Toby understood the real magic wasn't the lightning. It was having a friend who believed in you, even if that friend was a fox who loved baseball.

And every summer evening, when the sun painted the sky gold, Toby and Sparky would play their favorite game together — lightning fast and full of joy.
