The Fox Who Caught Lightning
Lily loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, she'd grab her glove and run to the old field behind her house. Her brown hair always bounced in two messy ponytails as she practiced pitching.
One afternoon, dark clouds gathered. Thunder rumbled like a giant's tummy, but Lily kept playing. She wound up for her best pitch when—CRACK! Lightning struck the old oak tree at the edge of the field.
From behind the tree stepped a fox. But this wasn't an ordinary fox. Its fur glowed like tiny stars, and its eyes shimmered the color of sunshine.
"You throw like a storm cloud," the fox said, surprising Lily. "All wild and powerful, but not quite sure where to go."
Lily's mouth fell open. "You can talk?"
"I'm Finnegan," said the fox, twitching his nose. "And I can teach you to throw a lightning ball. But only if you promise to share it with someone who needs cheering up."
Lily nodded eagerly. Finnegan showed her how to picture lightning in her mind—fast and bright and full of energy. When she threw the ball again, it zipped through the air so fast it crackled!
For a week, they practiced together. But when Finnegan asked her to share her magic, Lily hesitated. What if someone else learned her secret?
The next day, she saw a new boy sitting alone on the bench. His glove was old and worn, and no one would play with him. Lily remembered Finnegan's words.
She walked over and introduced herself. "Want to play catch? I can show you something special."
When she threw the ball to him, it zipped and crackled with lightning. The boy gasped, his eyes wide with wonder.
"Teach me?" he asked.
Lily smiled. "Finnegan taught me that magic is better when it's shared."
From that day on, Lily and the boy became best friends. And sometimes, when lightning flashed across the sky, they'd both spot a pair of glowing eyes near the old oak tree, watching them play.
