The Fox Who Caught a Star

lightningfoxfriend

Fennec was the smallest fox in the meadow, with ears as tall as flowers and fur the color of autumn leaves. Every evening, she sat on her favorite hill, watching the sky paint itself in purples and golds. But she hurried home whenever clouds gathered, for Fennec was afraid of storms.

One rainy evening, as thunder rumbled like a hungry tummy, something extraordinary happened. A bolt of lightning flashed — but instead of disappearing, it tumbled down like a glowing ribbon, landing right beside Fennec's rock. The little fox froze. But the lightning didn't zap or crackle. It shimmered sadly, now just a soft, flickering glow on the grass.

"I fell," the light seemed to whisper, though it had no voice. "I was racing to catch my brother thunder, and I tripped."

Fennec's heart beat fast, but she stepped closer. "Are you hurt?"

"I can't fly back up alone," the light flickered dimmer. "The sky is too far."

The fox remembered how her mother had taught her to climb the tallest oak tree to reach the bird's nest when she was little. That had been scary too. But sometimes, being brave meant helping someone who needed you more than you feared.

"I'll help you," Fennec said, surprising herself. "Climb onto my back."

The little lightning curled around her like a warm scarf. Fennec climbed higher and higher up the ancient oak, her claws slipping in the rain. When they reached the topmost branch, she stretched on her tiptoes, straining toward the clouds.

"Jump!" the lightning glowed.

Together they leaped. Fennec's paws left the branch, but they didn't fall. The lightning grew brighter, lifting them both up, up through the mist and rain, right into the heart of the storm cloud.

There, among the silver lining, dozens of lightning bolts danced like ribbons. They cheered as Fennec's new friend joined them. The biggest bolt of all — the lightning's brother — rumbled a thank-you that sounded like warm honey.

"You're not afraid anymore?" the little lightning asked.

Fennec looked down at the tiny meadow, then up at her new friend dancing among the stars. "I think storms are just lightnings having fun."

Every thunderstorm after that, Fennec sat on her hill and watched. And sometimes, when the lightning flashed, she swore it winked at her — hello from a friend.
