The Fox Who Called for Help

Lily loved her new iphone, especially its bright screen that glowed like a tiny moon. One afternoon, she sat by Silver Creek Park, playing games when a splash of red caught her eye. A fox! But not just any fox — this one wore something shiny around its neck.

The fox crept closer, tilting its head curiously. Lily held her breath. Wild foxes never came this close. Then she noticed what the fox carried in its mouth — a small glass bowl with a lonely goldfish swimming inside!

"Help!" squeaked a tiny voice. Lily blinked. Was her iphone talking? No — the goldfish was!

"Please help," said Finn the goldfish. "My friend Rusty the fox saved me from a hawk, but the pond where I live is drying up. We need to find me a new home!"

Lily's heart beat fast. A talking goldfish and a heroic fox? This was better than any game on her iphone!

"I can help," Lily said. "There's a beautiful pond in my backyard. My dad just filled it yesterday."

Rusty's tail wagged with joy. The fox set the bowl down gently. Lily used her iphone to call her dad, explaining there was an emergency (she left out the talking-fish part — some secrets are too magical to share).

"Bring the bowl home," her dad said. "We'll figure something out."

Carrying a goldfish bowl while a fox followed them was quite the adventure! Lily walked slowly so Rusty could keep up. The clever fox stayed in the bushes, popping out now and then to check on Finn.

When they reached Lily's house, her dad helped pour Finn into the backyard pond. The goldfish did three happy flips, sending ripples across the water.

"Thank you!" bubbled Finn. "Rusty, you're the best friend a goldfish could ever have!"

Rusty chattered happily, and to Lily's surprise, the fox nuzzled her hand before disappearing into the trees.

That night, Lily sat by her window watching the pond. Every evening at sunset, Rusty appeared to visit his friend Finn. And sometimes, if Lily watched closely, she'd see the fox dip one paw in the water, as if waving hello.

Lily smiled, setting aside her iphone. Real adventures were much more magical than anything on a screen.
