The Fox Who Befriended the Sphinx
Luna was playing in her backyard when a clever red fox trotted out from behind the oak tree. The fox had the shiniest orange fur Luna had ever seen, and its eyes sparkled like tiny stars.
"Hello there," said Luna softly.
The fox nodded its head. "Follow me, Luna. I need your help."
Luna's eyes went wide. The fox could talk! She grabbed her backpack and followed the fox through a secret tunnel in the garden hedge. On the other side, everything glowed with magical light.
They arrived at an ancient golden sphinx who sat beside a sparkling blue pond. The sphinx looked sad.
"Welcome," said the sphinx in a riddle-like voice. "I am the Guardian of Dreams. But someone has stolen my magical padel — the enchanted paddle that helps children cross the Dream Pond to visit their dreamlands."
"Who took it?" asked Luna.
"A lonely zombie," sighed the sphinx. "But he's not scary like in stories. He's just misunderstood and wants friends. He thinks if he keeps the magical padel, children will visit him."
Luna had an idea. She pulled out her old iphone from her pocket — it didn't work as a phone anymore, but she used it to play games and draw pictures.
"Can I show him something?" Luna asked.
The sphinx nodded. Luna drew a beautiful picture on her iphone screen — a picture of the zombie, the sphinx, the fox, and Luna all playing together by the Dream Pond.
They found the zombie sitting alone under a weeping willow. He looked green and bumpy, but when he saw Luna, he smiled shyly.
Luna showed him the picture. "We don't need a magic padel to be friends," she said. "We can play together right now."
The zombie's eyes filled with happy tears. He returned the magical padel, and that day, they all played games by the Dream Pond until the stars came out.
Luna learned that sometimes, people (or zombies) do things because they're lonely, not because they're mean. A little kindness can turn strangers into friends.
The fox walked Luna back through the hedge. "Thank you, Luna," he whispered. "You solved the riddle that even the sphinx couldn't — the riddle of how to make a friend."
Luna hugged the fox goodbye and ran inside, her heart full of magic and new friends.
