The Fox's Palm Hat

Maya found the hat at a thrift store on a Tuesday when she was supposed to be studying for bio. It was this floppy crimson thing with a wide brim, practically screaming main character energy. She'd been feeling invisible lately, just another sophomore face in the hallway crush, and something about the hat whispered what if.

Friday night, she wore it to Jordan's party. The moment she walked in, someone shouted "Damn Maya, serving straight vibes." The hat worked. People noticed. But then Fox materialized at her elbow.

Everyone knew Fox — real name Felix, senior, the kind of guy who wore leather jackets even in spring and had that lazy smile that made everyone assume he knew something they didn't. He'd been held back twice, making him ancient at seventeen, and there were approximately seven hundred rumors about why.

"Nice hat," he said, sliding onto the porch swing beside her. "You hiding?"

Maya hesitated. "Maybe."

Fox nodded like this made perfect sense. "I got held back because I skipped too much. My parents were ready to lose it, but my grandma was just like 'let the boy breathe.' She taught me to read palms before she passed."

He held out his hand. Maya stared, then placed her palm in his. His fingers were warm, calloused from guitar.

"You wear this hat because you think you need armor," Fox said, tracing her lifeline. "But you're already interesting. The hat's just... decoration."

Maya's throat tightened. "You can tell all that from my palm?"

Fox grinned, all sudden and genuine. "Nah. I'm bs-ing you. I just know what it's like to feel like you're performing for everyone."

Maya laughed, surprised. She reached up and took off the hat. Her hair was flat from it, probably ridiculous. But when Fox looked at her, his smile didn't change.

"Better," he said.

"Yeah," Maya said. "Me too."
