The Fox's Midnight Baseball Game

Pip was a small orange fox with very big ears and an even bigger dream – he wanted to be the greatest baseball player in the whole forest. Every night, he practiced swinging his favorite twig at acorns, sending them flying through the moonlight.

One evening, as Pip was rounding the bases he'd drawn in the dirt, he heard a strange groan. Rumble-rustle-CRASH! Out of the bushes stumbled the most peculiar creature. It walked stiffly, arms sticking out straight, mumbling something about 'brains...'

Pip's tail puffed up like a dandelion! It was a zombie! Or so he'd heard from the old rabbits' scary stories.

The zombie shambled toward Pip's baseball field. Pip was about to run when he noticed something – the zombie looked sad. Really sad. Its eyes drooped, and it kept sighing.

'Are you okay?' Pip squeaked, brave little fox that he was.

The zombie stopped. 'I think so,' it said in a creaky voice. 'I'm just really lonely. Everyone runs away when they see me.'

Pip's ears twitched. 'Do you like baseball?'

The zombie's face brightened. 'I LOVE baseball! But nobody ever wants to play with... well, a zombie.'

'Well,' Pip said, picking up his twig bat, 'we're about to change that.'

They played until the stars twinkled above. The zombie turned out to be named Zara, and she wasn't scary at all – just different. She couldn't run fast, but boy could she hit! Every time Zara connected with the ball, it would soar through the sky like magic.

Suddenly, a storm rolled in. FLASH! A bolt of lightning streaked across the dark sky, illuminating everything in brilliant purple-white. For a moment, Zara looked completely normal – a regular little girl, not stiff or zombie-like at all.

'Magic lightning!' Pip gasped. 'It shows who you really are!'

Zara smiled, her posture relaxed. 'An enchantment put on me by a grumpy wizard. He said only true friendship could break it.' She looked at Pip. 'I guess you're my first real friend.'

Pip grinned. 'And you're the best first baseman ever!'

They learned that night that sometimes the scariest things aren't scary at all – they're just lonely. And that baseball, friendship, and a little bit of magic lightning can fix almost anything.

The end. (Well, actually it was just the beginning – Pip and Zara played baseball every night after that, and they started a forest league where everyone was welcome, no matter how different they seemed.)
