The Fox's Magical Garden
Lily was bored. Her mom had given her an iphone to play with, but the games weren't working. Nothing was working. The screen just showed sparkles that danced like tiny fireflies.
"That's strange," Lily whispered, tapping the glass. The sparkles swirled faster and faster until—POP!—a little orange fox with the fluffiest tail Lily had ever seen hopped right out of the screen!
"You called?" the fox asked, twitching his whiskers. His name was Finn, and he was no ordinary fox. He was a magical garden guardian.
Finn led Lily through a secret door in her backyard that had never been there before. Beyond it lay the most enchanted place she could imagine—trees with silver leaves, flowers that sang softly, and a pond where the water glowed like moonlight.
In the middle of this magical garden sat the gentle bull named Barnaby. He was enormous, with a coat as brown as chocolate bars and kind eyes that made Lily feel safe immediately. Barnaby was guarding something special.
"It's the last golden papaya," Finn explained. "It grants one wish to pure-hearted children. But Barnaby won't let anyone near it unless they prove they're kind."
Lily approached slowly. Barnaby lowered his massive head, and Lily saw that his fur was tangled with burrs. Without thinking, she reached into her pocket and found the comb she used for her own hair.
"May I?" she asked softly. Barnaby nodded, and Lily gently combed through his thick fur until it was smooth and shiny. The bull let out a happy sigh that sounded like a rumble of thunder.
"You have shown kindness to animals," Finn said with approval. "The papaya is yours."
Lily thought carefully about her wish. She could wish for anything—toys, adventures, more magic. But she looked at Barnaby, who had been so lonely guarding the garden alone, and Finn, who worked so hard protecting everything.
"I wish for Barnaby to have a friend," Lily said.
The golden papaya glowed brighter than the sun, then split open to reveal another magical fox—Finn's sister, Fiona! She bounded out, and Barnaby's eyes twinkled with joy.
"Thank you," Finn whispered. "Sometimes the best wishes are the ones we make for others."
When Lily returned home, her iphone worked perfectly again. But sometimes, when she looked at the screen, she could still see those sparkles—and a little orange fox tail wagging in the corner.
