The Fox's Magic Pool
Lily pushed her golden hair out of her eyes and knelt beside the old stone pool. The water was so still it looked like a mirror.
"I wish I had a friend," she whispered, dropping a pebble into the water.
Ripples spread across the surface. Suddenly, the reflection changed. Instead of Lily's face, she saw a fox with bright orange fur and clever golden eyes.
"Hello," said the fox's voice, soft as rustling leaves. "My name is Copper."
Lily jumped back. "You can talk?"
"This is a magic pool," Copper replied. "Once a day, it lets me speak to someone on the other side. I've been waiting for a friend for a very long time."
Every afternoon, Lily returned to the pool. She and Copper talked about everything—her school, the forest where he lived, how he loved to chase fireflies at night.
One day, Copper didn't appear. Lily waited and waited, but the pool only showed her own worried face.
That evening, she heard soft whining near the garden fence. A small dog sat there, its fur matted with burrs. One paw was hurt.
But its eyes—its eyes were the same golden as Copper's.
"Copper?" Lily asked softly.
The fox appeared beside the dog, shimmering like sunlight. "The pool's magic is fading," he said sadly. "Soon I won't be able to visit anymore."
Lily's heart filled with determination. "Then I'll find you."
She followed the fox deep into the forest until they reached a hidden clearing. There, surrounded by glowing flowers, was another pool—this one bubbling with silver light.
"This is where the magic comes from," Copper explained. "But it's dying because no one believes in friendship anymore."
Lily thought of her classmates who laughed at imaginary things. Thought of grownups who said magic wasn't real.
"They're wrong," she said firmly. "Friendship IS magic."
She touched the water, and silver light burst upward, filling the whole forest. The hurt dog's paw healed. Copper's fur grew bright again.
"You saved it," Copper whispered. "You believed."
From that day on, Lily didn't just visit Copper through the pool. The fox came to her world, and the dog with golden eyes became her faithful companion. And sometimes, when adults weren't looking, the pool showed other children magical friends too.
Because Lily proved something wonderful: you're never too old to believe, and you're never too young to make magic real.
