The Fox's Magic Midnight Pool
Crimson the fox had the softest orange fur in the whole forest. Every night, while other animals slept, she crept through the twinkling trees to her secret spot. Behind a waterfall of sparkly moonbeams, there was a magic pool that showed wonderful things.
One full moon night, Crimson peeked into the water. The pool rippled and shimmered like liquid stars. Suddenly, she saw a green, patchy creature stumbling through the forest. Its arms waved oddly and its eyes looked sleepy and strange.
"A zombie!" gasped Crimson, her tail puffing up. "Everyone knows zombies are scary!" She started to run away, but then she noticed something strange. The creature in the pool's reflection looked sad and lonely. It was carrying a crumpled paper with a drawing of a fox.
Crimson's heart beat faster. Her mother had taught her that sometimes scary things are just misunderstood. The fox took a deep breath and followed the creature's path through the forest.
"Hello?" called Crimson softly.
The green figure jumped. "I'm not scary!" it squeaked. "I'm just Zed, and I'm new here. I'm a mushroom person, not a zombie!"
Crimson inched closer. Zed's skin was soft as moss, with little spots like a friendly toadstool. He wasn't a monster at all—he was just different.
"I drew this," Zed said shyly, showing his paper. "I wanted to find a friend, but everyone runs away when they see me."
Crimson smiled. "I ran away too. But my mother says brave animals look twice before they judge."
She showed Zed the magic pool. Together they watched as the water reflected both of them, side by side, with beautiful rainbow colors swirling around their friendship.
"Want to play?" asked Crimson.
"Yes!" cheered Zed. "I know a game where we catch fireflies in jars and make wishes!"
That night, by the magic pool, a fox and a mushroom person became the best of friends. Crimson learned that sometimes the scariest-looking things are actually the kindest—if only you're brave enough to look twice.
