The Fox's Lightning Game
Mia's tangled brown hair always bounced when she ran, and today she was running faster than ever through the Whispering Woods. Rain pattered on the leaves above as the sky turned purple-gray.
Then she saw him—a sleek red fox with the brightest amber eyes she'd ever seen. He didn't scamper away like other foxes. Instead, he sat perfectly still and tilted his head, as if waiting for her.
"Hello," Mia whispered, dropping to her knees.
The fox nodded. Not just a little tilt—a real nod, like her uncle did when agreeing with something.
"I'm Finn," the fox said. His voice sounded like crackling autumn leaves.
Mia gasped. "You can talk!"
"Only during storms," Finn explained, his fluffy tail swishing. "Want to play padel?"
"Padel? In the rain?" Mia giggled.
"Magical padel." Finn touched his nose to hers, and suddenly Mia held a glowing racquet made of solidified moonlight. A ball of pure lightning appeared between them.
CRACK! Lightning split the sky above as Mia swung her racquet. The lightning-ball shot toward Finn, who returned it with a graceful leap. Each hit sent sparks cascading around them. Mia's hair stood on end with static, but she didn't care. This was the most wonderful thing she'd ever done!
They played until the storm faded, the magical ball growing dimmer with each passing minute.
"Will I see you again?" Mia asked as the last raindrop fell.
"Every storm," Finn promised. "You're my friend now, Mia. Friends play together forever."
As the fox disappeared into the ferns, Mia noticed something magical: her hair now had streaks of copper, like Finn's fur. A reminder of her lightning friend and their secret game.
She ran home through the dripping forest, heart full of wonder, already watching the clouds for the next storm.
Sometimes the best friends arrive when the sky falls apart—and some games are worth waiting through any storm to play.
