The Fox's Golden Wish
Finn was a small fox with bright orange fur and a very big dream. Every night, he would creep to the edge of the old pond behind Mrs. Willow's cottage and peer into the dark water.
"Please come out," Finn would whisper. "I want to see you."
But the pond only rippled in reply.
You see, Finn had fallen in love with a goldfish. Not just any goldfish—the most beautiful one he had ever seen, with scales like tiny diamonds and a tail like a sunset. She would flash deep in the water, a streak of gold and magic, before disappearing again.
One morning, something amazing happened. Finn woke up to find that the hair on his head had turned bright pink! When he trotted to the pond, his new pink hair bounced and sparkled like candy floss.
The goldfish popped her head above the water. "Hello, fox with the funny hair!" she giggled.
Finn's tail wiggled so hard he nearly fell over. "You spoke to me!"
"I'm Clementine," said the goldfish. "Your hair made me curious. It's the color of cherry blossoms!"
For the next week, Finn visited Clementine every day. He learned that Clementine was no ordinary fish. She could grant one special wish to someone with a truly kind heart. But she could only leave the water for one minute, or she would lose her magic forever.
Finn thought and thought. He could wish for anything—endless berries, a cozy den, or even to fly like a bird!
"What will you wish for?" Clementine asked one starry night.
Finn looked at his reflection. His pink hair was starting to fade back to orange. And suddenly, he knew.
"I wish for you to be happy, Clementine. Whether you're in the water or not, whether you have magic or not—I wish for you to swim free and joyfully, always."
Clementine's scales glowed brighter than ever. A tear made of pure pearl dropped from her eye. "You didn't wish for yourself, Finn. You wished for me."
The water began to bubble and swirl. When it settled, Clementine was still there, but something had changed. Now she could breathe air too! She leaped from the water and landed gently beside Finn, her golden scales shimmering in the moonlight.
"True friendship sets magic free," she said. "Now I can be your friend on land AND in water."
And so Finn the fox and Clementine the goldfish became the most unlikely, wonderful friends in all the meadow. Finn's hair sometimes turned pink again whenever he was especially happy—which was quite often, now that he had found his golden friend.
