The Fox on the Padel Court

Maya's #1 rule for surviving junior year: never let them see you sweat. But currently, she was sweating through her neon yellow tank top while attempting to look like she totally belonged at the country club.

"Your form's getting better, Foxy," Liam said, using the nickname he'd given her in seventh grade. Back then, it was because she was cunning. Now it just felt like a reminder of how much they'd both changed.

Padel had been Liam's idea. His family had joined the club over the summer, and suddenly her oldest friend was obsessed with the sport, wearing pastel polos and talking about tournaments. Maya had agreed to play because that's what you did when your best friend got a new glow-up—you pretended you fit into their world.

"So," Liam said between serves, "about Saturday's party. Are you and Zoe coming together?"

Maya's stomach did that thing where it simultaneously wanted to explode and vanish. Zoe was the new friend, the one who understood AP Bio stress and questionable music taste. But Maya and Liam's history went back to sandbox days. "We haven't decided."

After the game, they grabbed smoothies at the clubhouse. Maya ordered the green detox one—something about trying new things, feeling healthier, whatever. She took a massive sip, feeling accomplished.

"You've got—" Liam started laughing. "Maya, you've got massive spinach in your teeth."

She froze. Green. Slimy. Humiliating. And this whole time, she'd been trying to impress everyone with her cool new padel skills and grown-up smoothie choice.

"Why didn't you tell me?" she hissed.

"I thought it was part of the look," Liam grinned, but then his expression softened. "You know you don't have to do any of this, right? The padel, the country club stuff... I just wanted to hang out with you."

Maya stared at her reflection. The spinach was actually kind of hilarious. And wasn't that the whole point of being sixteen? Figuring out which parts of yourself to keep and which to leave behind?

"You know what," she said, wiping her teeth with her thumb. "Let's just go get actual food. Burgers. No detox anything."

Liam's face lit up. "Finally. You've been hanging out with Zoe too much."

"Hey, Zoe knows good food." Maya laughed, and something clicked. She didn't have to choose between her old friend and her new one. She could be the girl who played padel and ate burgers and had spinach in her teeth sometimes. Maybe that was what being a fox really meant—not being perfect, but being adaptable enough to just be yourself.
