The Fox Network Glitch
Maya's hands were literally shaking as she fumbled with the coaxial cable behind the TV. The seventh grade talent show started in twenty minutes, and her livestream setup was giving her major drama.
"You good?" asked Liam, leaning against the doorframe looking effortlessly chill in his flannel.
"The cable's being trash," Maya muttered, "like my entire middle school experience."
Liam laughed. That sound. Why did that sound make her brain turn to static?
Suddenly, movement outside the window caught her eye. A fox—a legit orange-brown fox—trotted across her backyard with something in its mouth.
"No way," she breathed, pressing her face to the glass.
"What?" Liam joined her at the window. The fox paused, looked directly at them with amber eyes, then continued toward the woods.
"My grandpa says foxes are tricksters," Maya said quietly. "They appear when you're about to make a choice that changes everything."
"Deep," Liam grinned. "So, what choice are we making?"
Maya's heart hammered against her ribs. She'd been crushing on him since the science fair disaster back in October. But she couldn't just say that—she'd absolutely bear the embarrassment for the rest of her life.
Instead she said, "That I'm going to figure out why this cable hates me."
They spent the next hour troubleshooting her setup. Liam's arm brushed hers—electric—while they traced wires and restarted the router. The livestream launched without further drama, and they watched the talent show together on her phone, sitting shoulder to shoulder on her bedroom floor.
During intermission, the fox returned. This time, it sat at the edge of the woods and watched them through the window.
"It's been following us," Maya whispered.
"Maybe it's not the cable that's the problem," Liam said, turning to face her. "Maybe we're just overthinking the connection."
He reached for her hand. His palm was warm, slightly sweaty, and absolutely perfect.
Outside, the fox dipped its head once and disappeared into the trees.
"The signal just got way stronger," Maya smiled.
"Yeah," Liam said, not looking at the screen at all. "Yeah, it did."
Sometimes the best connections don't need any cable at all.
