The Fox in the Water

The retirement party was in full swing when Elena slipped away from the catering hall and found herself at the apartment complex pool. It was October, the water drained to nothing but cracked blue plaster, but she sat on the edge anyway, heels dangling into the empty basin. Somewhere in the distance, lightning fractured the sky—a silent strike before the thunder.

She thought about Marcus, her boss for fifteen years, retiring with full honors and a carefully concealed history of harassment. The board had known. They'd always known. And she had stayed silent, swimming in that toxic pool for the paycheck, for the promotions, telling herself it wasn't her fight.

A fox appeared at the chain-link fence—sleek and suspicious, watching her with amber eyes. It reminded her of the woman Marcus had promoted last month. Young. Hungry. Willing.

Her phone buzzed. Marcus's final message: 'You were like a loyal dog, Elena. That's your problem.'

The first drops of rain hit her bare arms. She could go back inside, accept her plaque, shake his hand one last time. Swim a little deeper.

Instead, she stood up. The storm broke open as she walked toward the hall, lightning illuminating everything she'd been too afraid to see.

Sometimes loyalty is just fear dressed up as virtue. And sometimes, you finally learn to bite.
