The Fox in the Water

The cat watched from the windowsill as Elena packed her life into cardboard boxes. Barnaby had been her wedding gift to Marcus—their first shared pet, a symbol of the home they'd built together. Now, three years later, Barnaby would be staying with Marcus. Elena couldn't afford pet deposits on an analyst's salary.

"You don't have to do this," Marcus said, leaning against the doorframe. He looked exhausted.

"Your friend from the firm made it pretty clear I'm a liability." Elena taped another box shut. "Corporate espionage charges tend to complicate marriages."

She'd found the recordings three weeks ago—Marcus, drunk at a bar with Damien from competing firm, spilling details about her company's merger. Damien, the fox who'd slid into their circle six months ago, buying drinks and becoming Marcus's best friend. All while collecting information.

The worst part wasn't the betrayal. It was that Marcus had done it for nothing. Damien had used the intel to secure his own promotion, then ghosted Marcus entirely.

"I didn't know he'd use it like that," Marcus said. "I thought we were just talking shop."

Elena laughed bitterly. "You've been swimming in corporate circles for fifteen years, Marcus. You know exactly what 'just talking shop' means."

She lifted the last box. Barnaby meowed, sensing the finality.

"He played us both," Marcus said quietly.

"No." Elena paused at the door. "Damien played you. I was just collateral damage."

She stepped into the hallway. Behind her, she heard Marcus sink onto the sofa. The cat jumped down and curled beside him, purring. In the end, Barnaby had chosen his human. Damien had chosen his career. And Elena—Elena was learning that sometimes the person sleeping beside you is the spy you never saw coming.
