The Fox in the Snapback

The house party was already lowkey popping when Maya walked in, clutching her red snapback like a security blanket. Her ex-best friend Kai was by the speakers, laughing with those girls who always wore too much gloss. Maya's stomach did that thing where it felt like she'd swallowed a handful of batteries.

"Yo, you gonna hide in the corner all night?"

Maya jumped. It was Leo from chemistry, leaning against the wall with that easy grin that made everyone comfortable. He was wearing this ridiculous fox hat — like, actual fox ears and everything — but he rocked it with total confidence.

"Just observing," Maya muttered, pulling her hat lower.

"Same." Leo nodded at Kai across the room. "Saw you guys were tight last year. What happened?"

"She happened." Maya gestured vaguely. "New friends, new vibe, I guess. I wasn't cool enough anymore."

"That's cap, and you know it." Leo adjusted his fox ears. "She's just figuring herself out. We all are. But real friends? They don't ditch you for a glow-up."

Maya looked at him, really looked at him. "Why are you wearing that?"

"My little sister made it. I promised I'd sport it." Leo shrugged. "She thinks foxes are clever. Mischievous. They adapt, you know? Like, they're themselves no matter where they are."

A fox darted through the open sliding door into the backyard. Actual wildlife at a house party. Everyone started filming, but Maya just watched it pause, look around, then keep moving like it owned the place.

"See?" Leo grinned. "That fox gives zero vibes about being different."

Maya smiled, actually smiled. She pulled off her snapback and ran a hand through her hair. "You know what? You're right."

"About the fox or the hat?"

"Both." She took a breath. "You wanna get food? I'm starving."

"Bet." Leo pushed off the wall. "There's pizza in the kitchen. And if Kai wants to act brand new, let her. You've got this."

As they walked toward the food, Maya caught Kai's eye. For a second, something flickered across her face — regret, maybe? But Maya kept walking, shoulders back, feeling lighter than she had in months. She'd make new friends. Real ones.

And yeah, she might need to borrow those fox ears someday.
