The Fox in the Pool

Maya pulled her bucket **hat** down low, hoping it would somehow make her invisible. This was her first pool party of sophomore year, and honestly? She felt like a total imposter. Everyone else seemed to glide through the water with perfect confidence while she sat on the edge, fully clothed, clutching her phone like a lifeline.

Inside, the TV blared some cheesy **zombie** apocalypse movie—her crush Jake's obsession. Maya had spent all week bingeing the series just to have something to talk about with him, but now that she was actually here? Her brain had gone completely blank. Social anxiety hit different at sixteen.

"Yo, did the **cable** just die?" Jake's friend shouted from the house. The screen had gone black mid-scene, cutting off some dramatic groan from the undead.

Wait, she recognized this feeling—staying awake until 3 AM scrolling through Jake's Instagram would do that to you.

Jake came outside, scratching his head. "Well, that sucks. Anyone down for night swimming instead?"

Everyone jumped in. Maya hesitated. She'd packed a swimsuit but hadn't actually planned on using it. The pool lights flickered on, casting ripples across the water. Something about the moment felt electric, like she was standing at a crossroads between staying safe on the edge or finally diving in.

Then she saw it—a real fox, copper-bright and impossibly still, watching from the fence line. It tilted its head, almost like it was judging her hesitation.

"You coming?" Jake asked, suddenly right beside her. "The water's actually not that deep."

Maya's heart hammered. The fox vanished into the shadows. She thought about all the nights she'd spent watching from the sidelines, letting fear call the shots.

She grabbed her swimsuit from her bag. "Yeah. Just give me a sec."

Sometimes the scariest part wasn't the zombies on screen or what people might think. Sometimes it was just choosing to show up. And tonight, Maya was finally showing up.
