The Fox in the Pool

Maya clutched her towel like a shield, heart pounding against her ribs. Everyone else was already in the water, laughing, their bodies sleek and confident. She'd been putting this off for weeks—ever since Jason's text lit up her phone: *pool party @ my place, u coming?*

She smoothed her bikini bottom for the tenth time. The fabric felt too revealing, like she was walking around with her secrets exposed.

"Maya! You coming in or what?" Jason called, splashing water toward the edge.

"Yeah! Just... gotta find my..."

She spotted it draped over a lawn chair—her phone's charging cable, forgotten in her haste to not look like she was overthinking this. Which she definitely was.

She grabbed it, then froze. A movement near the back fence caught her eye. A fox—a real one, reddish-gold and impossibly sleek—stared back at her through the wooden slats, like it knew something she didn't.

For a second, time stretched thin. The fox's eyes were ancient and patient, like it had seen a thousand teenagers agonizing over pool parties and crushes and all the things that felt like life-or-death when you were sixteen.

Then it was gone, vanishing into the night.

Maya exhaled. She'd been overthinking this. Again.

She dropped her towel and stepped toward the pool, cable still clutched in one hand like some kind of weird safety net. Jason's face lit up when she slipped into the water, and something loosened in her chest.

"You made it," he said, sounding actually happy about it.

"Yeah," Maya said, letting herself float on her back. The water held her up, weightless and warm. "I made it."

Somewhere beyond the fence, the fox moved through the dark, carrying all their secrets and not caring about any of them. And for the first time all night, Maya didn't either.
