The Fox in the Palm of My Hand
Maya's palms were sweating again. That's what happened when Leo—the fox-eyed junior who'd transferred to Ridgeview three weeks ago—looked at you in AP Chem like he was solving an equation you didn't even know you were part of.
"You're staring again," Chloe whispered, sliding into the cafeteria seat beside her. "It's giving major stalker vibes."
"I'm not stalking," Maya hissed, though her phone told a different story—she'd been cyber-spying on his public Instagram for twenty minutes that morning. "I'm gathering intel. There's a difference."
Chloe rolled her eyes. "Sure, Jan. Whatever helps you sleep at night."
The truth was, Leo moved like a fox through the crowded hallways—graceful, observant, always two steps ahead. And Maya, who'd spent her entire high school career flying under the radar, suddenly found herself wanting to be noticed. It was infuriating.
Then came the incident in the library.
Maya was crouched behind the biography shelves, definitely not spying on Leo's study session, when she sneezed. Loudly. Leo's head snapped up, and instead of looking annoyed, he'd smirked. That fox-like grin that made her stomach do things she didn't want to analyze.
"You know," he'd said, appearing beside her like magic, "if you wanted to know what I was reading, you could've just asked."
Maya's face burned. "I wasn't—"
"Spying?" He'd laughed, and it was genuine, not mean. "Relax. I was just researching palm reading for the spring fair. Sophomore year me went through a whole fortune-teller phase."
He'd held out his hand—palm up, fingers slightly curled. "Wanna see what your lifeline says?"
And that's how Maya found herself sitting in the library with Leo the Fox, his fingers tracing the lines on her palm while her entire life felt like it was tilting on its axis. Maybe coming out of her shell wasn't so scary after all. Maybe being seen—really seen—was worth the risk.
"Your lifeline's long," Leo said softly, looking up with those fox-eyes again. "But your heart line? That's where the story gets good."
