The Fox in the Palm Court

The game of padel had ended hours ago, but Elena remained at the club, nursing a gin and tonic as she watched the sunset paint the sky in bruised purples. Her opponent, Marcus—clever as a fox, ruthless in business, devastating on the court—had already left. Another match, another loss, both on the court and off.

They'd been dancing around each other for months. At forty-two, Elena should have known better than to fall for the charming predator who negotiated mergers the way he played padel: with surgical precision and zero mercy. But there she was, her palm still tingling from their handshake at the net, his touch lingering like a promise he'd never keep.

She checked her phone. Three emails from work, two from her ex-husband. She felt like a zombie moving through her own life—automated responses, scheduled smiles, the relentless routine of corporate existence. Marcus represented something dangerous: the possibility of feeling alive again.

'The sunset looks better from here,' said a voice behind her.

Elena turned to find him holding two fresh drinks, the foxlike grin playing at the corners of his mouth. 'I thought you left.'

'I was driving away and realized I'd rather be here.' He sat beside her, not touching her, but close enough that she could smell his cologne mixed with sweat. 'Elena, you play like you're afraid to win.'
