The Fox in the Mirror

Maya pressed her back against the cafeteria wall, phone clutched in sweaty hands. Three minutes ago, her best friend since kindergarten—scratch that, former friend—had posted a photo of the friend group hanging out without her. Again.

"You okay?" A soft voice broke her spiral.

Lena stood there, that quiet girl from AP Bio with the eclectic hoodie collection. She wasn't in Maya's usual orbit of popular-kid-approved associations, but she'd always seemed nice enough.

Maya forced what she hoped passed as a chill expression. "Yeah, totally fine. Just bear with me, I'm—"

"Waiting for them to text?" Lena finished, eyebrows raised. "Been there. Last month, my squad dropped me like I was contagious after I wouldn't sneak out to Tyler's party."

Maya blinked. "You? But you're—"

"What?" Lena's lips curved into this tiny, knowing smile. "Too smart to get played? Too quiet to have drama? Newsflash: nobody's immune to getting wrecked by people they trusted."

Something loosened in Maya's chest. "What did you do?"

"Learned that some people are like foxes—sly as hell, but you only see it when it's too late." Lena leaned against the wall beside her. "But here's the thing—I'm done waiting for people who don't value me. You should be too."

Maya's phone buzzed. Another group notification. More laughter she wasn't part of.

She looked at Lena, really looked at her, and saw someone who'd survived exactly what she was going through. "You know what? Let me get your number. Not because I'm desperate or whatever, but because you seem like you actually get it."

Lena's smile widened, genuine and bright. "Finally figured out you're the fox who got out before the trap snapped, huh?"

Maya typed Lena's contact into her phone with fingers that didn't shake anymore. Some chapters closed so others could begin. And this one? This one felt like it might actually be worth reading.
