The Fox In The Mirror

Maya stared at her reflection, the orange dye already fading at the roots. Her mom would freak if she saw the bathroom counter—splatters of semi-permanent rebellion everywhere. But Maya had bigger problems. Like Tyler's pool party today. At noon.

She spent forty-five minutes on her hair, trying to look effortless. It was ironic, really—spending so much time to look like you didn't care.

"Maya! Breakfast!" Her mom's voice carried up the stairs. "We're having spinach and egg scramble!"

Spinach. Of course. The green stuff that always got stuck in your teeth right when you needed to look cool the most. Maya ate carefully, checking the mirror obsessively.

By the time she got to Tyler's, people were already jumping into the water. The backyard smelled like coconut sunscreen and chlorine. Maya stood at the edge, toes curled into the warm concrete, watching everyone else float and laugh like it was the easiest thing in the world.

Then she saw Chloe—Tyler's ex, wearing the bikini that cost three months of allowance—looking at Maya with that smirk. The fox energy was strong with that one.

"Maya!" Chloe called out, gliding through the water. "Your hair looks so good like that! Did you do something different?"

Maya stepped in, the water shocking her legs cold. "Just washed it," she said, but Chloe wasn't done.

"You've got—" Chloe gestured to her own teeth, making an innocent face.

Maya's stomach dropped. She rushed to the side mirror, heart pounding. Nothing. No spinach. Just Chloe being Chloe.

But then Tyler swam over, his hair wet and messy in a way that actually looked effortless. "Hey," he said, grinning. "You coming in?"

And suddenly Maya realized something. The fox wasn't Chloe—it was fear itself, sly and sneaky, making her second-guess everything. She dove into the water, orange hair fanning out like flames, and finally stopped caring about what everyone else thought.

Some days you just have to jump in.
