The Fox in the Mirror

Maya stared at her iPhone, thumbs hovering over the screen as notifications flooded in like crazy. Everyone at龙湖 house was posting stories, living their best lives, while she sat in her bedroom feeling like a total flop.

"You good, bestie?" Zara's text flashed.

Maya sighed. Her bestie wanted her to come to Sarah's costume party. The theme was spirit animals—everyone was supposed to dress as their vibe. Maya had joked she'd go as a fox because they were sneaky and adaptable, but truth was, she felt more like a confused raccoon.

She slipped into her fox onesie, ears flopping, face masked in whiskers she'd drawn with her sister's eyeliner. Not exactly party goals, but it was what it was.

At the party, her iPhone buzzed nonstop. Everyone was taking pics, living for the likes, capturing every moment like it was breaking news. Maya started doing the same, posing by the snack table, grinning with her fox tail trailing behind her.

Then she spotted Liam—her Liam crush since seventh grade—dressed as a bear. Full bear suit. Looking goofy as hell but owning it completely.

"Nice fox," he said, handing her a soda.

"Nice bear," she managed, internally screaming.

They ended up on the back porch, away from the noise. Liam tugged off his bear head, sweat plastering his hair. "This thing is lowkey a torture device."

Maya laughed, finally setting down her iPhone. "Why a bear, though?"

"Bears hibernate," he said. "Sometimes I just want to sleep through everything, you know?"

For the first time all night, Maya felt real. Not the curated version of herself she projected online, but the messy, anxious girl who wondered if anyone actually saw her.

"Foxes adapt," she found herself saying. "I've been trying to adapt to everyone else's version of me so long I don't know who I actually am."

Liam nodded. "Maybe we both need to stop performing."

Inside, the party thumped. Outside, under crickets and moonlight, Maya finally understood: the real moments weren't the ones she captured on her iPhone. They were the ones she was too busy living to photograph.

Her phone buzzed with another notification. She ignored it.

"Wanna go back inside?" Liam asked.

"Yeah," Maya said, grabbing her iPhone but keeping it in her pocket. "But this time, no photos."

The fox and the bear headed back to the party, finally just themselves.
