The Fox in the Mirror
Maya stared at her reflection, the harsh **cable** of her self-doubt tangling around her like a warning. Sixteen, and somehow still waiting to become... what, exactly? The version of herself she'd been promised in all those coming-of-age movies?
"You need this **vitamin** blend, it's literally game-changing," Sasha had said at lunch, sliding her a neon-green smoothie. "My cousin's glow-up was insane."
Now Maya stood in her kitchen at 11 PM, staring down the ingredients like they were ancient artifacts. **Spinach** that looked suspiciously like sadness. **Papaya** that cost more than her entire skincare budget. This was supposed to fix her, somehow.
Her phone buzzed. *Group chat: BEACH WEEKEND*
Maya's thumb hovered. Last year, she'd spent the entire time in oversized sweatshirts, claiming sun allergies (she didn't have them). This year... what? Smoothies were supposed to magically transform her into someone who laughed easily, who wore bikinis without overthinking every stretch mark?
She dumped everything in the blender. The machine roared like an angry beast.
The result: something that looked like radioactive sludge.
"You're being ridiculous," she told herself.
She stepped outside, bare feet on cool concrete, carrying the abomination in a mason jar. The backyard was quiet except for crickets. And then—a rustle in the bushes.
A **fox** emerged, impossibly sleek, eyes catching the moonlight. It paused, watching her with calm intelligence. Not cute. Fierce. Wildly unbothered.
The fox tilted its head, then trotted away, tail flicking like it owned the night.
Maya set down the smoothie. Started laughing. Real laughter this time.
The fox hadn't needed a glow-up. The fox hadn't needed social media approval or vitamin-infused everything. The fox just *was*.
She poured the smoothie into the compost.
Somehow, for the first time, Maya thought she might finally be ready to just be too.
