The Fox in the Mirror

Maya stared at the mirror, running her fingers through her newly dyed fox-orange hair. The color screamed rebellion — or maybe desperation. Either way, it was definitely going to get her noticed. Or as her older sister would say, it was giving main character energy.

School's social pyramid had always kept her firmly at the bottom, safely invisible. But this year, junior year, she'd promised herself things would be different. The hair was step one.

Her mom's cat, Barnaby, wound around her ankles, purring like he'd already judged and approved her life choices. Better than her actual friends, honestly.

"You look like you're about to rob a bank," Zara said, leaning against Maya's doorframe, scrolling through her phone. "It's giving."

Maya rolled her eyes. "It's giving confidence, you mean."

"It's giving 'I need attention.'" But Zara was smiling. "Let's go. We're gonna be late."

The walk to school felt different somehow. The fox-colored hair caught the sunlight, turning her into something radiant. People actually looked at her — not through her, not past her, but AT her. For the first time, she wasn't just Maya in the background of everyone else's movie.

Until she saw him.

Caleb, who'd sat behind her in English since freshman year, who'd never once seemed to notice she existed, was watching her from across the quad. The intensity in his eyes made her stomach do that annoying flip thing.

"Nice hair," he said, appearing beside her locker like he'd teleported. "It suits you."

Her brain short-circuited. "Thanks. I, uh —"

"Always knew you had it in you to be loud," he said, and then, heart-stoppingly, "Want to get coffee sometime?"

Later, lying on her bedroom floor with Barnaby purring on her chest, Maya touched her fox-orange hair and smiled. Maybe the social pyramid wasn't so rigid after all. Maybe sometimes, you just had to be brave enough to climb.
