The Fox In The Lightning

Maya's phone buzzed with the third 'r u coming?' text from Jasmine. She groaned and threw on her favorite oversized hoodie — her social battery was already at 2%, and Jordan's party hadn't even started yet. The walk there felt like a death march. She wasn't built for parties where everyone stood around pretending to have the time of their lives while secretly checking their phones every thirty seconds.

Inside, the bass thumped against her ribs. Jasmine spotted her immediately and grabbed her wrist. 'You're finally here! OMG, come meet Jordan's cousin, he's so fox.' Maya didn't have the heart to tell her that 'fox' as an adjective died in 2023.

She escaped to the backyard ten minutes later, gasping for air that didn't smell like cheap body spray and desperation. That's when she saw it: a dog curled up on the patio furniture, mangy and golden-brown, watching her with old-soul eyes. Not someone's pet — this was a street dog, a survivor. Maya sat beside it, and it rested its head on her knee like they'd known each other for years.

'His name's Lightning,' said a voice from the shadows. A guy stepped forward — Jordan's cousin, actually. Cute in an understated way, dark hair falling over his eyes. 'I've been feeding him for weeks. He shows up whenever there's food.'

A real fox darted through the far edge of the yard, copper and quick, pausing to glance back at them before vanishing into the night. 'Wild thing,' Maya said. 'Won't let anyone get close.'

'Some things are like that.' He sat beside her, not too close, not too far. 'I'm Lucas, by the way. And you're Maya — Jasmine's been hyping you up all week.' Lightning shifted between them, a bridge of golden fur and quiet trust.

The first storm drop hit the patio. Then lightning cracked across the sky, purple and brilliant, illuminating Lucas's profile and the dog's perked ears and the whole ridiculous beautiful mess of being sixteen and awkward and alive.

'You wanna stay out here?' Lucas asked. 'Party inside's kinda mid anyway.'

Maya smiled, feeling something genuine unfold in her chest for the first time all night. 'Yeah. Lightning seems to like us better anyway.'
