The Fox in the Hallway

zombievitaminbearfoxiphone

Maya walked through sophomore year feeling like a straight-up zombie—hoodie up, headphones in, brain operating at 20% battery from staying up until 3 AM scrolling through her feed. The fluorescent lights of Northwood High buzzed like they were actively plotting against her mental health.

"You need to take your vitamin D, mija," her mom had said that morning, pressing the orange gummy into her palm. "You're practically translucent."

Maya had rolled her eyes but slipped it into her pocket anyway because, like, whatever made her mom chill.

Then she saw it.

Freshman Liam—awkward, braces, somehow always wearing shirts two sizes too big—was backed against his locker by Jason, the linebacker who looked like a bear who'd discovered pre-workout powder. Jason's friends stood behind him, phones out, recording.

"Cough it up, little man," Jason growled. "Or I bear-hug you so hard you'll need a new spine."

Maya's iphone buzzed in her hand. Someone had already posted the video to the school's Snapchat story with the caption ℎℎℎ "not again lol."

Liam's face was red. His eyes darted around like a trapped—

Fox.

That's when Maya noticed Liam's phone background. A red fox staring directly into the camera, somehow looking unbothered. Wild. Clever.

The fox energy radiating off Liam was real, even if nobody else saw it yet.

Maya's body moved before her brain could overthink it. She marched up to the bear of a situation and literally said the first thing that popped into her head: "Mr. Henderson is literally fifteen feet away and he's already in a mood about yesterday's vape incident."

Jason froze. He turned, saw the math teacher glaring down the hallway, and lowered his arms. "Whatever. Not worth it."

He and his crew scattered like roaches when lights flip on.

Liam pressed his back against the locker and slid down until he hit the floor. "Thanks," he mumbled.

Maya sat beside him. "No cap, you need to stop letting them corner you here every Tuesday."

"How did you—"

"I see things." She pulled the vitamin gummy from her pocket and offered it to him. "You look like you could use this more than me."

Liam actually laughed. He took the gummy. His braces glinted.

"I'm Maya."

"Liam. And that fox on my phone? I took that photo last summer. My uncle works at a wildlife sanctuary."

"No way. That's actually sick."

"Yeah?" Liam's eyes lit up. "I have, like, a thousand more. You wanna see?"

The bell rang, but neither of them moved immediately.

For the first time all year, Maya didn't feel like a zombie anymore. She felt awake. And she had a feeling this wasn't the last fox she'd encounter in these hallways.

Some bears are just loud. But the quiet ones? They're the ones you need to watch out for.
