The Fox in the Hallway

Maya pressed her back against the lockers, phone clutched in sweating palms. She felt like a total spy, watching Lena laugh with her friends at the end of the hallway. Lena was gorgeous—smart, funny, and totally out of Maya's league. But that hadn't stopped Maya from creating a fake Instagram account just to see what Lena posted about her day.

"That's such bull," her best friend Kae said, appearing beside her. "You're literally ghost-stalking her when you could just... talk to her?"

"Easy for you to say," Maya muttered, though she knew Kae was right. Ever since she'd come out as bi last month, everything felt different. Like she was seeing the world through new glasses, and all her old anxieties were suddenly in high def.

But today was different. Today, Lena was walking toward her.

Maya's heart did that thing where it forgot how to beat. Lena stopped right in front of her, tilting her head.

"Hey," Lena said. "I saw your sketch in art class. The fox one? It's really good."

Fox. Maya had drawn a fox as a self-portrait—cunning, hidden, watchful. She'd never shown it to anyone. Lena must have looked over her shoulder, seen something private.

"Thanks," Maya managed, her palms somehow sweating more.

"You know," Lena said, lowering her voice, "I've been trying to work up the courage to ask if you want to study together sometime. But I figured you'd think I was weird."

Kae appeared behind Lena, giving Maya a look that said: TALK TO HER.

"I'd love that," Maya said, and it was the truest thing she'd said all year. Maybe coming-of-age wasn't about becoming someone new. Maybe it was about letting yourself be seen—fox, anxiety, sweaty palms and all.
