The Fox in the Glass
The iPhone sat on her nightstand like a coiled snake, its screen illuminating the dark bedroom at 3:14 AM. Elena stared at it, knowing she shouldn't. Knowing that checking would be the final unraveling.
Three weeks ago, she'd been the spy. Embedded in Rutherford Dynamics to find the leak, she'd never expected to fall for the man she was investigating. Marcus had brought her coffee every morning, remembered how she took it. Had touched her lower back when they passed in the hallway, casual electric intimacy that made her chest ache.
Now the roles were reversed.
The fox appeared at the edge of the parking lot every evening—sleek rust-colored creature watching her through the glass doors of their office building. Its amber eyes seemed to know everything. Last night, she'd found herself speaking to it through the glass: "He's lying to me, isn't he?"
The fox had only tilted its head.
She'd discovered the encrypted messages on Marcus's phone while he showered. Rutherford's proprietary formulas. Meeting times with their competitor. The cable connecting her to the murder case had been severed the moment she'd looked, but she couldn't stop tugging at the loose end.
"I trusted you," she'd whispered when he'd emerged, steam rising from his skin.
He'd paused, towel around his neck. "With what?"
She hadn't answered. Instead, she'd become his shadow, checking his iPhone whenever he left it unguarded. Following him after work, watching him meet the same woman twice, coffee shops and hotel bars. The guilt was suffocating, but the alternative—confronting the possibility that she'd been played, that their intimacy was as manufactured as the fox's appearances—felt worse.
Tonight was different. The screen lit up with a notification: "The package is ready."
Her hands trembled as she reached for it. Outside, the fox watched from the darkness, motionless as understanding dawned. Some betrayals, she realized, came not from malice but from necessity. Marcus wasn't selling secrets—he was gathering evidence against Rutherford's illegal dumping.
He'd been the spy all along. Just like her.
The fox dipped its head in acknowledgment before disappearing into the night, leaving Elena alone with the truth, and with the hardest choice she'd ever had to make.
