The Fox in the Garden

The spinach stuck between Marcus's teeth had been there since lunch, but Elena couldn't bring herself to tell him. Instead, she watched him serve the padel ball with practiced aggression, his back muscles glistening in the afternoon heat. They were at that expensive resort in Tenerife—the one they'd booked after counseling, the one that was supposed to save them.

"You're not even trying," Marcus said, missing her return. The ball sailed into the fence.

"I'm trying." Elena wiped sweat from her forehead. "Maybe I'm just tired of competing."

"Everything's a competition with you."

"Everything's a performance with you."

The silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating. A fox appeared at the edge of the court—lean, orange, watching them with what looked like amusement. Neither mentioned it. Some things you didn't say aloud anymore.

Later, she found him at the pool, swimming laps with relentless precision. Back and forth. Stroke, breathe, stroke. She remembered when they'd first met—how he'd swum out too far in Lake Michigan, how she'd followed him, how they'd tread water together as the sun set, both pretending they weren't terrified of drowning.

Now she watched him from the edge, his body cutting through water while hers stayed anchored to dry land.

"I saw you watching me," he said later, in the room they barely spoke in. Outside, lightning cracked the sky open, sudden and violent.

"I was remembering when we were happy."

"We're not happy?"

"We're not unhappy. That's worse."

He reached for her then, his hand finding hers in the darkness. For a moment, everything was simple again—just skin against skin, breath against breath. But then she felt the distance between them, an ocean she no longer knew how to swim across.

"You have spinach in your teeth," she finally said.

He laughed—really laughed—for the first time in months. The fox appeared at the window, watching them still, and in that moment of imperfect honesty, something between them shifted. Not fixed. But changed.
