The Fox in the Flashlight

Maya's palms were sweating so bad she could barely grip her iPhone. This was it — the night of the biggest party of sophomore year, and for the first time ever, she'd been invited. By Sarah. The Sarah who sat two rows behind her in homeroom and actually seemed to think Maya was cool.

'You coming, bestie?' Sarah had texted an hour ago, and Maya had stared at those words like they were written in gold.

Now she was creeping through the woods behind the old Miller place, following the glow of distant laughter and bass thumping through the trees. Her phone was her only light, and every snap of a twig made her jump.

That's when she saw it.

A fox. Red fur glowing silver in the moonlight, watching her with eyes that seemed way too intelligent. It tilted its head, and Maya froze, heart hammering against her ribs.

'You heading to the party too?' she whispered, feeling ridiculous.

The fox bolted — but not away. It bounded toward the clearing.

Maya followed, emerging from the trees to find everyone gathered around a bonfire. Sarah spotted her immediately, waving her over with a huge grin.

'There she is! I was worried you wouldn't come.' Sarah grabbed her hand. 'Oh my god, your hands are freezing.'

'Nerves,' Maya admitted, and Sarah laughed.

'Don't be nervous. You're with friends now.'

And just like that, the knot in Maya's chest loosened. Someone handed her a soda. Someone else cracked a joke that made her actually laugh. For three hours, she didn't overthink everything. She didn't worry about saying the wrong thing or standing the wrong way.

It was way past midnight when Sarah walked her back to the woods.

'Same time next week?' Sarah asked, like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

Maya grinned, her phone buzzing with a new friend request. 'Absolutely.'

As she trudged home through the dark, she saw the fox again, watching from the edge of the trees. This time, Maya waved.

'Thanks,' she whispered.

The fox dipped its head like it understood, then slipped away into shadows that suddenly didn't seem so scary anymore. Maya's palm stopped sweating as she gripped her phone, already typing her response to Sarah's latest text: 'Tonight was everything.'
