The Fox in the Filtered Light

Elora had been swimming in data for three weeks straight. The corporate servers at Vitalix Corporation were vast, deep oceans of information, and her assignment—find the leak—required diving where no corporate spy should have to go.

Each morning she started with the same ritual: a vitamin D supplement placed carefully on her tongue, swallowed dry, a small defiance in a life built on secrets. She'd met Marcus at the company gym three years ago. He was the one who'd first called her 'fox'—a playful nickname for what he claimed was her cleverness, her ability to see what others missed.

Now Marcus was her prime suspect.

The evidence mounted like sediment in her gut: encrypted emails sent from his personal account at 3 AM, meetings with competitors he'd failed to disclose, sudden withdrawals from their joint savings account. Elora told herself she was just doing her job. But at night, lying beside him, listening to his breathing, she felt like the traitor.

'It's just a vitamin formula,' he'd told her last week, when she'd asked about the late nights. 'People act like we're curing cancer.'

She'd wanted to believe him. Wanted to believe the fox he'd named her was still something wild and free, not this domesticated creature of surveillance and suspicion.

The final data drop came through on Tuesday—proprietary research on a new synthetic compound, sent directly to their biggest rival. Timestamped and undeniable.

Elora waited until Marcus left for his morning run before making the call. Corporate security arrived within the hour. She watched from their living room window as they escorted him out, his confusion slowly giving way to recognition.

Their eyes met through the glass. His expression wasn't anger. It was something far worse: understanding. He'd always known what she was. He'd just loved her anyway.

The vitamin bottle sat on the counter. Elora swallowed one pill, then another, until her vision swam and the edges of the room blurred into something almost forgiving.
