The Fox in the Feed

Maya's fingers flew across her iPhone screen, double-tapping sunset gradients and brunch plates until her eyes burned. Three hundred followers. Two weeks into sophomore year and still nobody at Westwood High knew she existed beyond 'that quiet girl in third period English.'

'You're letting them win,' said Jax, sliding onto the cafeteria bench beside her. He was the only person who'd spoken to her voluntarily since she transferred—a lanky guy with paint-stained fingers and hair that defied gravity. 'The algorithm. The feed. It's all vitamin for your ego, Maya. Junk food.'

She snorted. 'Says the guy with zero social media presence.'

'I prefer to be mysterious.' He grinned. 'Like a fox.'

'You're not mysterious, Jax. You're just—'

'Not playing the game,' he finished. 'Which drives people crazy.' He nodded toward the popular table where Chloe held court, her iPhone practically glued to her manicured hand. 'See that? Everyone thinks she's the queen bee, but watch. She's always checking over her shoulder. Always performing.'

Maya watched. Jax was right. Chloe maintained this perfect facade, but there was something hunted about her. Fox-like.

'What if I don't want to play?' Maya whispered. 'What if I'm just... not good at it?'

Jax's expression softened. 'Then don't. But also—stop acting like you need their validation like it's some daily vitamin supplement. You're interesting, Maya. You sketch those insane cartoons in the margins of your notebook. You actually listen when people talk. Those are real things.'

Something loosened in her chest.

'Throw me your phone,' he said.

'What?'

'For one lunch period. No feed. Just... talk.'

Maya hesitated, then slid her iPhone across the table. It felt like letting go of a lifeline. But when Jax started making ridiculous voices to act out their English assignment, she forgot to miss it.

By the time the bell rang, her cheeks hurt from laughing. And somewhere along the way, she'd stopped caring what Chloe's table thought.

'You know,' Maya said, 'you're actually pretty cool for someone who says things like 'vitamin for your ego.''

Jax winked. 'Told you. Fox energy.'
