The Fox in the Feed
Maya's cat, Pancakes, meowed at 3 AM like he always did when she was doomscrolling. Her iphone glowed with Instagram stories of people living their best lives — or at least faking it convincingly.
"You're overthinking it," she muttered to herself, but also to the cat, who didn't care about her social anxiety.
Her phone buzzed. A text from Alex, the cute barista from the coffee shop who'd slipped her a vitamin gummy instead of a chocolate when she'd looked tired after her morning run.
"Saw this and thought of you," it read, followed by a photo of a fox sitting on a park bench like it owned the place.
Maya's stomach did that thing where it forgot how to anatomy.
She'd been running from herself for months, ever since she'd moved schools and decided to reinvent her personality — again. Fourth time this year. The old Maya would've replied with something chill and effortless. The new Maya was still figuring out what that meant.
"Nice fox," she typed. Then deleted. Too dry.
"Omg lol," she tried. Deleted. Too eager.
"That's literally my spirit animal," she sent, then immediately wanted to die.
Pancakes headbutted her hand, demanding pets like the tiny dictator he was. Outside her window, something moved in the alley — a flash of russet fur.
She crept to the window and there it was: an actual fox, staring up at her with eyes that said, "I know what you're doing. I see you trying to be cool. It's okay. You'll figure it out."
Or maybe that was just her projecting. Mental health was weird like that.
Her phone buzzed again. Alex: "Working till 8. Save me a vanilla latte?"
Maya grinned. Maybe the new Maya didn't have to be anyone specific. Maybe she could just be the person who ordered extra vanilla lattes and took photos of urban wildlife and tried — sometimes failed, but tried.
The fox trotted away, its tail flickering like a flame in the streetlights. Pancakes purred. And Maya replied, "Bet. Extra shot?"
Some stories don't have epic endings. Sometimes you just text a cute barista at 3 AM and realize that's enough for now. That's the whole vibe.
