The Fox in the Fedora
Maya's sweaty palm pressed against her phone screen, checking Instagram for the third time in two minutes. The Spring Fling was in full swing down the hall, and she was currently hiding in the girls' bathroom, questioning every life choice that led to wearing this ridiculous vintage hat she'd thrifted because 'it would give her main character energy.' Spoiler: it wasn't giving main character energy. It was giving 'I'm trying too hard' energy.
The bathroom door creaked open and Chloe walked in, smoothing her dress. Chloe, who had somehow convinced everyone she was the social butterfly of sophomore year while Maya was still figuring out how to exist without wanting to melt into the floor whenever someone looked at her.
'Nice hat,' Chloe said, and Maya couldn't tell if she was being sarcastic or not. That was the thing with Chloe—she was like a cat, all mysterious vibes and unreadable expressions. One minute she seemed like your friend, the next you're wondering if you were just being catfished into a fake friendship.
'Thanks,' Maya muttered, adjusting the brim. 'It's... vintage.'
'It's bold,' Chloe corrected, meeting Maya's eyes in the mirror. 'I like it. You're like, actually brave for wearing that.'
Maya's palm stopped sweating. Maybe the hat wasn't the problem. Maybe the problem was that she'd been treating high school like a performance instead of just... living it. Chloe wasn't some fox outsmarting everyone in the social hierarchy. She was just another sixteen-year-old trying to figure out who she was, one outfit and awkward interaction at a time.
'You wanna go back out there?' Chloe asked. 'Together?'
Maya took a breath, straightened her ridiculous hat, and nodded. 'Yeah. Together.'
And for the first time all night, she didn't feel like she was faking it.
