The Fox in the Bleachers

Maya's mom had chopped her hair into a disaster zone the night before sophomore year. The kind of butchered bob that screamed I gave up somewhere around the second inch. Maya spent forty-five minutes with gel and a borrowed beanie hat, praying the cafeteria would be too distracted to notice.

Fourth period, Jordan—with his stupid perfect everything—leaned over in baseball practice. His team jersey hanging loose, that effortless grin that made half the sophomore class lose their collective minds.

"Nice hat, Fox."

The nickname had stuck since seventh grade when she'd outsmarted the entire math team into thinking she'd tutored them through finals. She hadn't. But nobody questioned the Fox after that.

"Shut up, Jordan." She pulled the hat lower. "Don't you have zombies to slay or whatever?"

"Baseball, Maya. We play baseball." But he was smiling.

That night, the home game against Northwood. Maya sat in the bleachers with her best friend Chloe, both of them zombie-like from studying until 3 AM for finals. Chloe had smuggled in sour candy. The stadium lights hummed against the September sky.

Jordan pitched. Fast. Clean. Nobody could touch him.

Then—crack.

The ball soared toward the bleachers. Maya scrambled. Her fingers closed around it just as it would've smashed into Chloe's face.

The entire stadium went silent.

Jordan jogged over, his hair damp with sweat, chest heaving. "You caught it."

"I guess."

"That's my lucky ball now."

She rolled her eyes. "You want it back?"

"Nah." He stepped closer. "You keep it, Fox."

The next day at school, she didn't wear the hat. Her uneven hair didn't matter. Jordan winked at her in the hallway. Chloe made gagging noises.

Some things, she decided, were better than perfect hair. Even if she still died a little inside every time she saw her reflection.

But being the Fox? That part? Yeah, she could work with that.
