The Fox in the Baseball Hat
Marcus stood outside the house, hand gripping the brim of his dad's old baseball hat like it was a life preserver. The cap was beat-up — faded blue with a weird stain on the side — but wearing it made him feel like he had armor against the inevitable awkwardness of Jessica's party.
"You got this," he whispered to himself. "Be smooth. Be chill. Don't be weird."
Inside, the bass thrummed through his chest. People were already dancing in the living room, and somewhere near the kitchen, he heard laughter that sounded way too confident. Marcus adjusted his baseball hat and made his way through the crowd, pretending he knew what he was doing.
"Hey! Baseball cap boy!" It was Jessica, smiling and holding a red Solo cup. "Glad you made it. Love the hat, very... vintage aesthetic."
"Thanks," Marcus managed, feeling his face heat up. "It's got character, right?"
"Totally." She nudged him playfully. "So I heard you're pretty good at being sneaky. Like, ninja-level. My friend Maya says you pulled off this fox-level move in math class yesterday — something about switching seats without Mr. H noticing?"
Marcus froze. That was NOT supposed to be public knowledge. "I mean, I wouldn't say fox-level..."
"That's exactly what a fox would say," Maya appeared behind Jessica, grinning. "Deny and deflect. Classic fox behavior."
"Whatever." Marcus rolled his eyes, but he was smiling now. "Being a fox is better than being the guy who spilled punch on himself earlier, right?"
"Touché." Maya laughed. "But seriously, that baseball hat thing? Kinda working for you. It's like, confidently uncool. Which is actually cool. You know?"
Marcus adjusted the brim, feeling something shift in his chest — less like anxiety, more like... lightness. Maybe this wasn't so different from being a fox after all. Just lean into the weirdness. Own it.
"So," Jessica said, "you gonna dance or just stand there being all mysterious in your fox baseball hat?"
Marcus took a breath. "Fox baseball hat. That's the vibe now?"
"That's the vibe." Maya nodded approvingly. "Own it, Marcus."
He stepped toward the dance floor, baseball cap pulled low, fox energy fully activated. For the first time all night, he wasn't pretending.
