The Fox In My Mirror
I stared at my iPhone screen, zooming in on the disaster that was supposed to be my new aesthetic. My hair — the shade I'd lovingly dubbed "fox orange" on my Instagram story — looked straight-up radioactive in the fluorescent bathroom lights. #Flopped.
"What were you thinking?" Jenna had DM'd five minutes ago, after I posted the hair tutorial captioned "new vibe who dis."
Good question. The truth? I'd been thinking about Leo, the guy in my AP Bio lab who couldn't stop talking about how much he loved girls with red hair. Pathetic, I know. But my best friend Kayla had hyped me up at CVS: "Embrace the fox energy, girl! It's giving mysterious forest creature." Turns out, it was giving traffic cone.
I threw my phone onto my bed and marched to the kitchen. My mom had bought papaya again — those alien-looking fruits she swore would "clear my skin." I sliced into one like it had personally offended me, the juice running down my wrist. The first bite was weirdly good, though. Sweet and musky and nothing like the calculated aesthetic content I'd been feeding my followers all summer.
And that's when I saw it through the sliding glass door — a real fox, trotting through our backyard like it owned the place. Its fur was actually beautiful, not chaotic-red like my hair but this perfect burnished copper that caught the morning light. It stopped, looked right at me with these golden eyes, and then kept moving.
It wasn't performing. Wasn't worried about its angles. Wasn't checking its reflection or wondering what the squirrels thought.
My phone pinged. Another DM from Leo: "love the hair btw. looks fire."
I stared at the message, then at the fox disappearing into the woods, then at my orange-stained fingers and the half-eaten papaya. Something in my chest loosened.
I picked up my iPhone and opened my story, where the failed hair tutorial lived. I deleted it. Then I took a photo of the papaya, messy and uncurated, and posted it with the caption: "actually kinda vibes."
My hair would fade. But this? This felt like finally starting.
