The Fox in My Feed

Maya's iphone buzzed for the third time in five minutes. Another notification. Another like on the photo she'd carefully staged that morning—aesthetic toast, perfect lighting, #livingmybestlife. But the truth? She'd spent twenty minutes arranging that toast just right, and she was exhausted from maintaining the perfect feed.

"You good?" her bestfriend Jordan asked across the cafeteria table. "You've been staring at your phone like it holds the secrets of the universe."

Maya locked her screen. "Just... thinking about how everything online is so curated, you know? Like, we're all performing versions of ourselves."

"Deep," Jordan laughed, sliding her tray over. "Want some of this spinach salad? My mom's on this health kick again."

Maya wrinkled her nose. "Pass. Last time I ate spinach, I got it stuck in my teeth during my presentation and didn't realize until halfway through. traumacore moment."

That evening, Maya sat on her back porch, doomscrolling instead of finishing her history project. Then she saw it—a fox, sleek and copper-bright, padding through her suburban backyard like it owned the place. It stopped, looked directly at her with intelligent amber eyes, and something about its unselfconscious presence hit her hard.

The fox wasn't performing. It wasn't curating its image or worrying about angles. It just *was*.

Maya grabbed her phone instinctively, wanting to capture it, share it. But then she stopped. Some moments weren't for the feed. Some moments were just for living.

The next day at lunch, she pushed her phone aside. "You know what?" she told Jordan, reaching for the spinach salad. "I'll try some. Life's messy. Might as well embrace it."

Jordan's eyes widened. "Who are you and what have you done with Maya?"

Maya smiled, genuine and unfiltered. "Just figuring out that the real stuff happens off-screen."

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. She ignored it.
