The Fox in Left Field
Maya's iPhone buzzed against her thigh, another Instagram story from Jamie. She'd been basically low-key spying on him since freshman year, watching every story, liking every post, never saying a word. Total loser behavior, she knew, but her TikTok addiction didn't help.
"You going to the game tonight?" Chloe dropped into the cafeteria seat beside her, "Tyler's pitching."
Maya's stomach did that thing. "Maybe."
"Uh-huh." Chloe's called-it face said everything. "You've been obsessed with Tyler since—"
"Shut UP."
The baseball game that night was everything Maya dreaded and craved. She sat in the bleachers, iPhone clutched in her hand like a lifeline. Tyler on the mound, throwing heat. The school mascot — that fox costume with the creepy fixed grin — paced the dugout. Someone inside it, mystery unknown.
Then it happened. Lightning cracked across the sky, the field lights flickered. The umpire called for a weather delay. Everyone flooded toward the concession stand for cover.
Maya got separated from Chloe in the chaos. She ended up near the fox mascot, who'd removed the giant head. Jamie. Of course. The guy she'd been internet stalking for months.
"Hey." He ran a hand through his sweaty hair. "You're Maya, right? English project?"
Her brain short-circuited. "Uh. Yeah."
"Cool." He grinned, and her stomach flipped again. "I'm Jamie."
"I know," she blurted. "I mean — I've seen you around."
He laughed. It wasn't mean. "Yeah, me too. We should, like, study sometime."
Another lightning flash illuminated everything. In that moment, Maya realized something: she wasn't a fox, clever and hiding. She was just herself, standing in the rain, heart racing, possibility opening up like a baseball flying over the fence.
"Yeah," she said. "We should."
The rain started coming down harder. Neither of them moved.
