The Fox Hat Summer

hatfoxpapayafriend

Leo pulled the fox hat down over his ears, trying to disappear into the fabric. It was his third day at Camp Nokomii, and exactly zero people had spoken to him. The hat was supposed to be ironic—a joke from his mom before she dropped him off—but now it was just his safety blanket.

Then he saw Maya.

She was sitting on the dock, slicing through a papaya with a pocket knife like she'd been doing it her whole life. Leo had never even seen a papaya in real life, let alone knew someone who'd pack one for camp.

"Nice hat," Maya said, not looking up.

Leo froze. Was she being sarcastic? Was it a roast? He stood there like a statue until Maya finally glanced up and laughed.

"I'm not making fun of it. Foxes are cool. My brother and I used to pretend we were foxes when we were little. We'd hunt through the backyard like we were on a mission." She held out a slice of papaya. "Want some? It's actually fire once you get past the texture."

Leo took it. The first bite was weird—kind of like melon but different—but the second one hit different.

"I'm Leo," he said, finally sitting down.

"Maya. Want to see something sick?"

She led him into the woods, past the cabins, until they reached this clearing with an old treehouse that was definitely not authorized by camp staff.

"This is where I go when everything gets loud," Maya said, climbing up like it was nothing. "My brother showed me this spot last year. He's in college now, so it's kind of our thing."

Leo followed her up, and for the first time all week, his fox hat wasn't hiding him. It was just part of his vibe.

"Thanks for the papaya," Leo said.

"Anytime, friend," Maya grinned. "Wanna come back tomorrow? I can show you where the actual foxes den up behind the arts and crafts cabin."

Leo adjusted his hat, feeling something in his chest shift. Yeah. He would be back.
