The Fox Hat Chronicles
Maya pulled the vintage fedora down lower over her eyes, the brim casting a shadow across her face. The hat had seemed like a good idea at the thrift store—distinctive, artistic, maybe even a little mysterious. Now, standing in Jake Miller's crowded living room while bass thrummed through the floorboards, it just felt like a neon sign flashing 'I DON'T BELONG HERE'.
"Nice hat," someone said, and Maya couldn't tell if they were being genuine or if that was teen code for 'what are you even doing'. She mumbled thanks and sidestepped toward the refreshments table, suddenly intensely fascinated by the selection of chips.
That's when she saw him—the new guy, Liam, standing alone by the back door. He WAS kind of a fox, with messy dark hair and those indie-artist vibes that made Maya's stomach do that annoying flip thing. She caught herself staring and quickly looked away, but not before their eyes met for approximately three devastating seconds.
Now she was trapped in this endless loop: Should she talk to him? What would she even say? 'Hey, I'm the weird hat girl, what's your deal?' Literally terrible. Maya found herself pseudo-spying on him from behind a potted plant, watching Liam scroll through his phone like it contained the secrets of the universe.
"You know he's looking at you too, right?"
Maya practically jumped out of her skin. It was Zoe, one of the juniors, holding a red cup and eyeing Maya with what looked suspiciously like amusement. "The new guy. He's been lowkey watching you all night. That hat is working, honestly."
"I—what?" Maya's face burned. "No, he's definitely not."
"Girl, I have been third-wheeling enough situations to recognize mutual pining when I see it." Zoe nudged her. "Go talk to him. I'll literally hype you up from right here."
Before Maya could overthink it into oblivion, Liam started walking over. The hat suddenly felt way too tight, or maybe that was just her heart trying to escape her chest.
"Cool hat," he said, and he sounded genuine. "I've been looking for something like that at thrift stores but I can never find good ones."
Maya's brain short-circuited. "You—you thrift?"
"Yeah, I'm kinda obsessed." Liam grinned, and wow, he had nice eyes. "There's this shop downtown, Vintage Soul, have you been?"
And just like that, Maya went from spy-in-the-shadows to actual conversation with the cute new guy. The hat wasn't a disguise anymore—it was just a hat, and apparently, it was working.
