The Fox Code

Maya's laptop screen glowed at 2 AM as she refreshed Instagram for the hundredth time. The social pyramid at Northwood High was brutal, and she'd been stuck in the middle layer since freshman year. Now a junior, she was tired of running away from her own ambition.

"You still up?" flashed the message from Jake—the guy she'd been lowkey stalking since September. Her heart did that annoying fluttery thing.

"Yeah," she typed back. "Why?"

"Need your help. I know you're good with ... stuff."

Maya raised an eyebrow. Jake, the popular soccer player, asking HER for help? This was new.

"What kind of stuff?"

"Spy stuff."

Maya snorted so loud her mom probably heard it through the wall. "Okay, James Bond. What's the mission?"

"Someone's spreading rumors about Chloe. I think it's coming from inside her friend group. I need to find out who's behind the fake account."

Chloe. Of course. The queen bee who'd randomly decided to be nice to Maya in chemistry last week. The girl Jake had been crushing on forever.

Maya's fingers hovered over her keyboard. This was her chance to level up in the social pyramid—or crash and burn spectacularly.

"I'll need access," she wrote. "And cable. My internet's trash."

"Meet me at the library tomorrow before school. I'll bring coffee."

The next morning, Maya found Jake hunched over a laptop in the back corner. He had his hood up, looking nervous.

"You came," he said, sliding her a coffee. "You're like, secretly a genius, right?"

"I watch a lot of YouTube," Maya admitted. "Show me what you've got."

Jake pulled up a suspicious Instagram profile. "This account's been posting fake DMs and screenshots about Chloe. But the writing style... it's too familiar."

Maya leaned in, her detective brain firing. The profile was @northwoodfox—cute. But the posts were ruthless. "We need to cross-reference the posting times with who was absent at school."

"Already did that," Jake said. "It's either Sarah, Kyle, or..."

"Or who?"

"Or someone with access to Chloe's phone."

Maya's stomach dropped. "You think one of her best friends is doing this?"

"That's why I need the fox code," Jake said. "Your thing. The way you can find patterns in data."

Maya blushed. He'd noticed?

They worked in silence, Maya's mind racing through connections and possibilities. The spy mission was thrilling—better than any social media drama she'd witnessed from the sidelines.

"Got it," she said twenty minutes later, pointing at the screen. "Whoever this is always posts during third period PE. And they use the same emoji pattern as—"

"Sarah," Jake finished, his face falling. "Chloe's best friend since seventh grade."

Maya felt a pang of sympathy for Chloe. Betrayal hit different when it came from your inner circle.

"What do we do?" Jake asked.

Maya thought about the social pyramid, about where she'd been stuck for so long, about what kind of person she wanted to be.

"We tell Chloe," she said firmly. "But first, we make sure we have proof."

Jake looked at her with something like respect. "You're not just smart, Maya. You're actually kind of a badass."

The fox code, she thought. And she hadn't even needed a cable connection to crack this case.
