The Fox Coat Fiasco

vitaminhairfoxbear

Maya stared at the biotin **vitamin** gummies on her desk like they held the secret to surviving junior year. According to TikTok, they'd make your **hair** grow faster, thicker, better. Her hair was fine — literally and figuratively — but everyone else at Northwood High seemed to have discovered some mystical hair gospel she'd missed.

Her grandma's vintage **fox** fur coat hung on the back of her door, a fluffy monstrosity with glass eyes that followed Maya around her room. Her friends would literally die if they saw it. 'That's giving grandma chic,' Lena would say. 'In a bad way.'

But it was freezing, and Maya's puffer was at Zoe's house, and she was already running late for Tyler's party. The Tyler. The one who'd finally noticed her in chem lab last week.

She grabbed the coat. What's the worst that could happen?

Walking into Tyler's basement felt like entering a different dimension. The fox coat was instantly too warm, too weird, too everything. Someone she didn't recognize was doing a TikTok dance in the corner. Another person was definitely drinking something they shouldn't be.

Then she saw Tyler. He was wearing that same gray sweatshirt from chem, looking somehow softer in the dim light. He spotted her and actually smiled.

'Maya! Hey!' He pushed through the crowd. 'I love your coat. It's giving vintage thrift.'

She stood there paralyzed. Was he being sarcastic? Was this a social death trap she'd walked into?

'Thanks,' she managed. 'It was my grandma's.'

'That's awesome.' His smile was genuine. 'Wanna get some punch? I promise it's actually just punch.'

She followed him through the basement, the fox coat suddenly feeling like armor instead of a costume. Maybe weird was okay. Maybe she didn't need biotin gummies or perfect hair or to fit into some mold that didn't exist anyway.

Later, curled up on her bed replaying every moment, she texted Lena: 'Tyler liked the fox coat.'

Lena responded immediately: 'NO WAY. That's iconic behavior.'

Maya laughed into her pillow. Some things you just had to **bear** with. Other things surprised you. And sometimes, the thing you thought would ruin everything ended up being exactly what made it perfect.
