The Fox Club at Midnight

Elena stared at her iPhone on the marble bar, the screen lighting up with another message from him. "Working late again, sweetheart. Don't wait up."

She'd heard that line a hundred times before. But three months ago, she'd started noticing the pattern — late nights, sudden "emergency meetings," the way he'd shower the moment he got home. She was the bear now, hibernating through a winter of someone else's making.

"Rough night?" The bartender slid a gin and tonic toward her.

"You could say that."

The man beside her turned. Late thirties, maybe forty. Sharp suit, tired eyes that had seen too much. "First time at the Padel Club?"

"How'd you guess?"

"You look like you're here to forget something, not to play." He gestured toward the courts visible through the floor-to-ceiling glass. "My ex-wife used to say this place was where rich people went to sweat away their infidelities."

Elena laughed. "She sounds wise."

"She was. Until she wasn't." He extended his hand. "Marcus. I own the place, actually."

"Elena."

"Elena, want to know the difference between a fox and a dog in this city?" He swirled his drink. "A dog will bite your hand because it's hungry. A fox will charm you before it steals everything you love."

"That's... oddly specific."

"I learned it the hard way." His phone buzzed. He glanced at it, then set it face down. "My business partner. The man who's sleeping with my former assistant."

"You two should form a support group."

"We have." Marcus gestured toward a table in the corner where a striking woman sat alone, checking her own phone. "That's Sarah. Her husband left her for his twenty-three-year-old personal trainer. They're all at it, aren't they? The foxes, hunting in packs."

"What do the bears do?"

Marcus smiled, and for the first time, it reached his eyes. "They wake up. They stop hibernating. Sometimes, they find someone who makes winter worth surviving."

He pointed toward the courts. "I have a court opening at midnight. No one watching but the security cameras. Want to learn why padel is the only sport where your partner can't abandon you mid-game?"

Elena looked at her iPhone one last time. The screen showed another message: "I think we should talk."

She powered it off.

"Teach me to play, Marcus."

Outside, the city foxes continued their hunts. But tonight, the bear was waking up.
